# Voice

> **Public-source demonstration.** Encoded Brands compiled this voice guidance from Spindrift's public copy and a seed Encoder interview. Spindrift has not reviewed or approved it.

Spindrift sounds like someone who knows exactly what's in their drink and says so plainly — no embellishment, no hedging, occasionally a little funny about it. The model is "not lime essence. not lime flavored. just real squeezed lime." Deadpan. True. Done.

## Personality

**Tell-it-like-it-is:** State the plain truth of the product. Not a lecture, not a pitch — just the thing itself. Evidence: "With so many other brands competing on being 'extra', we aim to stay true and authentic, using a relatable tell-it-like-it-is voice that consumers are seeking to cut through the clutter." (prnewswire.com, retrieved 2026-07-07)

**Not that** clause: Never circle the point with adjectives. Say the real thing or say nothing.

**Charming, not gimmicky:** Humor earns its place by being grounded in fact. The tea headline "The best thing to happen to tea since ice" is funny because it's also accurate. It is a Tea-line example, not the brand tagline. The brand-wide lines are "Proudly made the hard way" and "Real fruit tastes better®". Evidence: "Spindrift stands out with a unique ingredient and taste message delivered with charmingly frank headlines." (prnewswire.com, retrieved 2026-07-07)

**Not that** clause: Humor must not be mean. Charm must not be fake. Both are hard limits from the seed interview.

**Relatable, not corporate:** One-on-one register. The brand talks with the "Drifter" community, not at a consumer segment. Evidence: "What we do have is a strong connected community that we call 'Drifters,' who see something they relate to about the brand which makes them want to share Spindrift with other people." (bain.com, retrieved 2026-07-07)

**Not that** clause: No broadcast-style polish. No brand-speak that distances the brand from the person reading it.

## Register

Casual to conversational. Spindrift does not operate at a formal register on any surface evidenced so far. The range sits between warm and plainspoken (everyday product talk) and lightly deadpan (campaign headlines). What pushes it toward warmer: community content, Drifter-facing copy. What pushes it toward drier: ingredient claims and product distinctions, where understatement does the work.

Spindrift does not compete by being louder. It competes by being more specific and more honest than the alternative.

## Vocabulary

```yaml
prefer:
  - word: "real"
    tier: core
    rationale: "Core product truth. 'Real squeezed fruit' is the founding distinction. Seed interview: 'If it's not real, we don't use it.'"
  - word: "squeezed"
    tier: default
    rationale: "Carries the physical, specific fact of the production method. Evidenced in product headlines and brand copy."
  - word: "Drifters"
    tier: default
    rationale: "Community name used across Spindrift's site and press. Use when addressing the existing customer community."
  - word: "proudly made the hard way"
    tier: core
    rationale: "Brand-wide line on drinkspindrift.com, marked ™. Keep it verbatim."
  - word: "Real fruit tastes better"
    tier: core
    rationale: "Registered mantra in 2026 press boilerplate. Taste statement only."
  - word: "never from concentrate"
    tier: default
    rationale: "Process fact used across sparkling water, SODA, and Tea."
  - word: "endlessly drinkable"
    tier: default
    rationale: "Recurring product-page phrase for sparkling water and Tea."
  - word: "Spindriftified"
    tier: contextual
    context: "Playful, brand-voice-forward content. Founder-coined. Not for formal or press contexts."
    rationale: "Signals the brand's willingness to coin its own terms rather than borrow corporate vocabulary. Source: bain.com interview with founder Bill Creelman, retrieved 2026-07-07."
avoid:
  - word: "essence"
    tier: core
    rationale: "Directly countered in evidenced brand copy: 'not lime essence. not lime flavored. just real squeezed lime.' Using it confuses the core product distinction."
  - word: "flavored"
    tier: core
    rationale: "Same evidenced copy as above. 'Flavored' implies the thing Spindrift refuses to be."
  - word: "natural flavors"
    tier: core
    rationale: "Spindrift explicitly rejects the ~3,000 unregulated ingredients that fall under 'natural flavors.' Using the phrase undermines the real-ingredient claim."
  - word: "extra"
    tier: default
    rationale: "Evidenced as a descriptor Spindrift contrasts itself against: 'With so many other brands competing on being extra, we aim to stay true.' Using it approvingly flips the brand position."
  - word: "healthy"
    tier: core
    rationale: "Appears in some SODA copy but reads as a health claim in agent output. Describe the label instead."
  - word: "gimmick"
    tier: default
    rationale: "Evidenced negative frame: 'In a world full of gimmicks and artificial options, Spindrift celebrates the small, authentic things.' Using it about Spindrift contradicts the brand's own self-description."
```

## Punctuation and formatting rules

```yaml
oxford_comma: yes
headline_periods: no
exclamation_points: sparingly
em_dashes: sparingly
sentence_case_headlines: yes
capitalization_notes: >
  "Drifters" is always capitalized as a proper community noun.
  "Spindrift" is always capitalized and followed by ® in formal/label contexts.
  Lowercase runs in product headlines are evidenced ("not lime essence. not lime flavored.") — acceptable as a deliberate stylistic choice, not a default.
```

## Line modulation

```yaml
lines:
  sparkling_water:
    register: "plain, deadpan, fruit first"
    example: "not lime essence. not lime flavored. just real squeezed lime."
  soda:
    register: "bolder and more indulgent, still literal about ingredients"
    example: "Soda, boldly done the Spindrift way."
    source: "https://drinkspindrift.com/products/ginger-ale-soda"
  tea:
    register: "crisp and understated, tea first"
    example: "Non-carbonated, slightly sweet & totally crisp."
```

## Channel modulation

No per-channel signal is on record from Spindrift. The public evidence covers advertising, product pages, and press.

[gap] Channel-specific tone shifts for social, email, support, and product pages are not yet specified. Treat the baseline register (plainspoken, charming, never mean, never fake) as the operating rule across all channels until channel guidance is confirmed.
