# Voice

Zebco sounds like a seasoned angler who grew up teaching the neighbor kid to fish: plain, warm, and direct. No jargon, no hype, no condescension. When the gear does something well, say so plainly. When it doesn't, don't dress it up.

## Personality

**Straight:** Say what the gear does. Not what it almost does, not what it could theoretically do in the right conditions. Experienced anglers will know the difference, and first-timers deserve the same honesty.

**Accessible without being patronizing:** Zebco talks to first-timers without condescending to them. Simple language is not dumbed-down language. Every novice is a potential lifetime angler; treat them that way.

**American and grounded:** The brand's humor is self-deprecating and unpretentious. When R.D. Hull's early reel got compared to a beer can, he made a joke version. That instinct — light, self-aware, never defensive — runs through the voice.

**Mission-forward:** "We make the reels that get America fishing." The mission is practical, not inspirational. The point is to get more people on the water, not to celebrate the brand.

## Register

Zebco operates in a casual-to-plain register. It is never formal. It is never slang-heavy. The floor is straightforward American English; the ceiling is warm and a little playful. The brand moves toward playful for beginner-facing content and toward plain-spoken precision for experienced anglers.

Do not move into:
- Elite fishing culture vocabulary that excludes newcomers
- Marketing superlatives that overpromise ("the best reel ever made")
- Tone-deaf nostalgia that reads as old-fashioned to younger audiences (as noted in a first-party Forbes quote: "if you look back at fishing ads, it's no surprise they don't resonate with younger generations")

## Vocabulary

Each entry carries a `tier` per BCP v0.7 §7.1.1.

```yaml
prefer:
  - word: "easy"
    tier: core
    rationale: >
      Ease of use is Zebco's founding proof point. The first spincast reel was
      marketed as 'guaranteed to never backlash.' Ease is a fact, not a marketing word.
  - word: "accessible"
    tier: default
    rationale: >
      Zebco explicitly recast fishing as 'the easy, accessible, and social pastime
      that it is' (first-party, Forbes 2020). This word names the mission.
  - word: "social"
    tier: default
    rationale: >
      Part of the same repositioning: fishing is not a solitary expert pursuit,
      it is something people do together.
  - word: "straight"
    tier: default
    rationale: >
      Owner-stated: Zebco earns the respect of experienced anglers by being straight
      about what the gear does.
  - word: "get America fishing"
    tier: core
    rationale: >
      Owner-stated mission language. Preserves both the practical frame (get people
      on the water) and the national identity (America). Use verbatim or close paraphrase.
avoid:
  - word: "elite"
    tier: default
    rationale: >
      Zebco's repositioning explicitly moves away from exclusionary fishing imagery.
      Elite positioning contradicts the accessibility mission.
  - word: "expert-only"
    tier: default
    rationale: >
      The brand's founding product removed the skill barrier to casting. Language
      implying advanced skill as a prerequisite runs counter to the brand's origin.
  - word: "guaranteed to catch fish"
    tier: core
    rationale: >
      Owner-stated boundary: do not oversell or overstate what the gear does.
      No reel can guarantee a catch; Zebco is straight about what its products do.
```

## Punctuation and formatting rules

```yaml
oxford_comma: yes
headline_periods: no
exclamation_points: sparingly
em_dashes: never
sentence_case_headlines: yes
capitalization_notes: >
  "America" is always capitalized in the mission line. Product names follow
  Zebco's published style. No all-caps for emphasis.
```

## Audience modulation

Two audiences are owner-confirmed. Voice principle is the same for both; execution differs.

**First-timers (beginners, younger anglers, people new to fishing):** Use plain language. Lead with ease and accessibility. Never use technique jargon without a brief gloss. Do not assume prior knowledge of tackle, knots, or species. The job is to remove barriers, not signal expertise.

**Experienced anglers:** Be precise about specs and performance. Skip the hand-holding. These readers earn respect through straight talk, not reassurance. Do not oversell. If a reel is entry-level, say so. If it handles a specific use case well, say that specifically.

Channel modulation beyond these two audiences is not yet specified.

```yaml
contexts:
  beginner_facing:
    tone: "Warm, encouraging, plain. Remove barriers; do not explain what fishing is."
    register: "Casual. Short sentences. No jargon without a gloss."
    example: "[gap] No owner-supplied example available."
  experienced_angler:
    tone: "Precise, peer-level, straight. Let the specs speak."
    register: "Plain. Technical vocabulary is fine; hype is not."
    example: "[gap] No owner-supplied example available."
```
