# Voice

The kit provides real campaign and trade copy but no complete tone-of-voice manual. The patterns below are **inferred editorial guidance**, derived from K1 pages 18–28, K2/K3 page 1 and the official pages cited below. They describe an observed voice rather than claiming brand-owner confirmation.

## The sound of the brand

Loch Lomond moves between an invitation to discover whisky and a practical explanation of its flavour. Short, emphatic headlines carry a product, flavour or campaign line. Body copy then links sensory detail to a still, oak cask, maturation choice or maker. The scenic setting is recognisable, but flavour and whisky-making supply the substance.

The voice is confident about its craft and welcoming to discovery. It does not need to test the reader's expertise, flatter wealth or perform an exaggerated Scottish accent. Public copy occasionally becomes ornate; that observation is not a reason to add more ornament. The distinctive information is the connection between process and taste.

essence:
  tagline: "Explore the Spirit Within"
traits:
  - is: "Sensory and specific"
not: "A catalogue of luxury adjectives"
description: "A named fruit, sweetness or smoke note carries more meaning than exquisite, ultimate or unparalleled."
  - is: "Assured about making whisky"
    not: "Unqualified superiority"
description: "Still design, oak and the people responsible provide evidence; a superlative needs its own dated claim."
  - is: "Inviting"
not: "A test of connoisseur status"
description: "Direct invitations to explore and discover are common; expertise is explained rather than used to exclude."
  - is: "Rooted in a recognisable place"
    not: "A fictional Highland legend"
description: "Loch Lomond and Ben Lomond anchor the setting without invented history or dialect."

## Sentence and headline behaviour

- **Headlines:** product or age first, a compact sensory phrase, or an established campaign line. K1 uses uppercase display typography, but body copy remains normal mixed case. A headline cannot absorb an entire product paragraph.
- **Body rhythm:** one clear proposition, followed by one or two sentences explaining flavour or making. Lists suit tasting notes and trade information. Concrete nouns do most of the work: pear, oak, still, cask, smoke, distillery.
- **Point of view:** “we/our” is appropriate inside brand-authored copy; neutral third person suits independent descriptions and the example site's commentary. First person does not make the demonstration an official statement.
- **Direct address:** restrained “you/your” supports discovery and gifting. It does not imply that the reader needs alcohol to belong or celebrate.
- **Metaphor:** the official home and Master Blender pages compare craft to art or music. At most one coherent analogy is useful; literal production or tasting information follows it.
- **Humour and language mixing:** no dependable comedic persona or multilingual catchphrase system was established. Scots stereotypes, forced puns and invented Gaelic are not defaults.

## Vocabulary and naming

| Prefer in the appropriate context | Avoid or qualify |
| --- | --- |
| Loch Lomond Whiskies; Loch Lomond Distillery; Single Malt Scotch Whisky | “Loch Lomond whiskey” as the product/brand's own spelling; bourbon; Irish whiskey |
| fruit, honey, soft smoke; then expression-specific descriptors | Treating the three notes as added ingredients or identical in every bottling |
| Straight Neck pot stills; Swan Neck pot stills; American oak casks | “Triple distilled” as a universal claim; “single malt blend” to describe a blend of distilleries |
| Master Blender Michael Henry, when the role is relevant | An invented quote or personal endorsement in his name |
| discover, explore, crafted, matured, flavour, character | unlock, elevate every sip, liquid gold, ultimate indulgence, unparalleled luxury |
| The Open; AIG Women's Open; a named edition and year | An invented tournament, club sponsorship, champion endorsement or current ticket offer |
| The kit's named campaign lines, identified by their source | A new line presented as the official current tagline |

The preferred new-copy spelling is **whisky**. For en-US communication, “flavor” and other American spellings are acceptable; the product/category retains “Scotch Whisky.” The trade sheets' headings contain “whiskey,” which is recorded as a source variation rather than promoted to the naming rule. Quoted archival wording remains attributable to that source.

## Voice by context

| Context | Register and useful structure | Evidence |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Consumer product | Product identity → a short sensory description → supported cask/process detail → a clear destination. A tasting note can use Nose / Taste / Finish. | K1 pp. 18–20; official 12 Year Old and US Original product pages. |
| Distillery / educational | Explain what a production choice changes. A technical noun receives an accessible explanation. | Official distillery, cooperage and Master Blender pages. |
| Golf partnership | Warm shared interest in craft, place and the championship. Year, course and edition stay distinct. No performance benefit from drinking. | K1 pp. 11–12, 23–25; official Spirit of The Open page. |
| Trade / hospitality | Concise product distinctions, expression/ABV and operational usefulness. The dated US sheets are evidence of a direct, practical register, not current stock or supply promises. | K2/K3 pp. 1–2. |
| Customer service | Calm and literal. Identify the relevant market and published support route. No tasting flourish around a delivery problem. | Official contact page and US store fulfilment footer. |
| Corporate responsibility | Precise, dated, scoped descriptions. A target stays a target until an outcome is supported. | Group responsibility and sustainability pages. |

## Source phrases and their role

- **“Explore the Spirit Within”** — K1, repeated across pages 13 and 18–28: an invitation/campaign line, not a therapeutic claim.
- **“Exceptional flavours flowing from remarkable stills”** — K1 pages 26–28: process and flavour in one short proposition.
- **“Perfectly Balanced”** — K1 pages 18–22: the 12 Year Old's supplied descriptor, not a health or nutritional assessment.
- **“Discover more”** and **“Find out more”** — observed global-home CTAs, checked 6 October 2026. Plain action labels rather than extravagant promises.

## Illustrative writing transformations

These examples were written for this package. They are not approved campaign copy, verbatim briefs or comparison executions.

| Less faithful draft | More faithful draft | Reason |
| --- | --- | --- |
| “Unlock an unparalleled journey of liquid gold.” | “Discover Loch Lomond 12 Year Old. Peach and pear, vanilla sweetness and a gentle hint of smoke.” | A named expression and sensory information replace generic prestige. Product basis: K1 p. 18. |
| “Two centuries of uninterrupted perfection in every bottle.” | “The Loch Lomond name reaches back to an earlier distillery near Tarbet in 1814.” | The historical claim remains limited to the site named in the official history. |
| “Your secret to a better round.” | “Explore Loch Lomond's The Open editions.” | The partnership is the subject; drinking is not a sporting advantage. |
| “Guaranteed free next-day delivery, wherever you are.” | “Delivery options depend on your destination.” | Service copy accounts for market differences rather than borrowing a global-site promotional strip. |
